The tumbler came out of the oven glossy and bright, snowflakes all the way around. Almost all the way. At the back, where the two ends of the print should have met, there is a thin stripe of bare white metal, and one snowflake has been sliced neatly in half.

Usually that stripe means the wrap was printed at the wrong size, or the design was never made to meet itself. With sublimation, most Christmas disasters come down to the blank: its size and what it is made of. The designs below are sorted by the blank they are made for, free ones first.

The short version: Sublimation only works on white or light-colored polyester and on blanks with a polyester coating. For a 20 oz skinny tumbler, the standard wrap is 9.3 by 8.2 inches; print it at 100 percent, never “fit to page”. Mirror every print; you only notice it on words and anything with a direction. For dark cotton shirts, use DTF or iron-on vinyl instead.

Which design for which blank

Blank Design to look for Watch out for
20 oz skinny tumbler A wrap sized 9.3 x 8.2 in, straight or tapered to match A white seam where the ends do not meet
11 oz mug A mug wrap about 8.5 x 3.5 in Text sitting under the handle
Light polyester shirt or sweatshirt A single PNG with a transparent background Cotton blends printing faded
Round ornament, door hanger, coaster A round design Square designs with corners cut off
Dark shirt Not sublimation: DTF or iron-on Sublimation ink disappearing on dark fabric

The paper wrap test. Print the tumbler wrap on plain paper at 100 percent, cut it out and wrap it around the tumbler before you touch sublimation paper. If the ends overlap a little, you are fine. If there is a gap, check the tumbler’s size and whether you have a straight or tapered blank.

Christmas tumbler wraps for 20 oz skinny tumblers

A skinny tumbler comes as straight (same width top to bottom) or tapered (narrower at the base). A tapered blank needs the tapered file, because a straight wrap on a tapered tumbler overlaps at the bottom and gaps at the top. Some wraps are drawn to meet themselves at the seam and some are not. The free snowflake wrap above says so plainly: its designs are not seamless. For a wrap that is not seamless, turn the join to the back, where the pattern is quietest. The three wraps below come in straight and tapered files at 9.3 by 8.2 inches, so the cards just describe the pictures.

Christmas sublimation designs for shirts and sweatshirts

Sublimation ink dyes the polyester itself, so the shirt has to be white or light and mostly polyester. The higher the polyester, the brighter the print; on a cotton-heavy blend it looks pale from the first press and paler after washing. Mirror the image when you print, so the words read the right way once the paper is face-down on the shirt.

If your customers want designs on black or navy shirts, sublimation is the wrong tool. DTF transfers or iron-on vinyl handle dark fabric; our Christmas SVG roundup has cut files for the vinyl route.

Christmas mugs

For an 11 oz mug, the wrap is a strip about 8.5 by 3.5 inches. Wrap it tight with heat tape so nothing lifts in the press, and check where the handle falls before you print: text that runs under the handle is text nobody reads. The free snowman wrap above is sized for exactly this mug, and most shirt PNGs in this post also fit a mug if you shrink them to about three inches tall.

Round designs for door hangers, wind spinners and coasters

Round blanks need round designs. A square PNG on a round blank loses its corners, and usually the corners are where the words were. The free red truck design above is round too, sized 12 by 12 inches for a door sign.

Time, temperature and pressure

There is no single Christmas setting. Time, temperature and pressure depend on the blank, so use the numbers from the company that sold you the tumbler, mug or shirt, and write them on a sticky note by the press. Two habits help with any blank: tape the transfer down so it cannot shift and blur (that blur is called ghosting), and put a sheet of butcher paper between the press and the shirt to catch stray ink.

For small sublimation pieces that are not round (tags, keychains, little panels), plain PNG clipart often works better than a big shirt design. Our Christmas clipart roundup has sets that print well small.

Can you sell what you make with these designs?

This is the question for sublimation more than any other craft, because most people making twenty tumblers in November are making them to sell. Creative Fabrica’s help center says freebies come with its Single Sales License, which includes commercial use. Files downloaded through the All Access subscription can be used commercially under its subscription license. If you cancel, you can keep selling what you already made, but you cannot start new products for sale with those files. A Full POD license from the subscription drops to Basic POD when you cancel, which matters if you sell through print on demand. Selling through print on demand sites has its own Basic and Full POD rules on top of that, and some sellers write their own terms into the listing. If you only need one or two designs, premium files can also be bought one at a time instead of through the subscription. The Cozy Christmas bundle above, for example, allows print-on-demand and physical products but not reselling the digital files. You can sell the tumblers; you can’t sell the PNG.

Frequently asked questions about Christmas sublimation designs

What size is a 20 oz skinny tumbler wrap?

The common size is 9.3 by 8.2 inches, and every tumbler wrap in this post uses it. Still measure your own tumbler, because blanks vary a little between brands.

Do I need to mirror sublimation designs?

Yes, for anything with words or a direction. The printed side goes face-down on the blank, so an unmirrored design comes out backwards.

Can I sublimate on a black shirt?

Not in the normal way. Sublimation ink is transparent, so it only shows on white or light polyester. For dark shirts, use DTF transfers or iron-on vinyl.

Why is there a white line on my tumbler?

Usually the wrap was printed smaller than 100 percent, or it is a design that is not seamless. Print at actual size, check straight versus tapered, and do the paper wrap test first. And if it happens anyway, turn the stripe to the wall and give that one to your brother.

Are free sublimation designs OK to sell on tumblers?

The freebies come with commercial use under Creative Fabrica’s license, according to its help center. Read the listing too, in case the seller added terms, and never resell the file itself.

A seam that meets

Start from the blank, then pick the design. This time the snowflakes meet at the back, all of them whole. If you are putting lettering of your own on a design, our Christmas fonts guide shows which ones read well at tumbler size.
